Thinking about it some more, it seems quite comparable to the English use of “put on”, which is equally flexible
E.g. “Put on some music”, “Put John on the phone”, “The wizard put/placed a spell on her”, “I put on a show”
English is perhaps less regular due to the subtly different “put down”, “put up”, “turn on”
E.g. “I put down a deposit on a house”, “I turned on the engine”
Personally, I find it comforting to see similar complexity in English. If I can manage that, then hopefully I can learn the same in Japanese 🙂
Great video; it seems like a lot of the meaning behind kakeru is “put on”, even the lock if you think of old school locks being latches that were put on the door. It’s one of those words you just have to get used to from tons of exposure. Loved the story you told to help show all the meanings! ありがとうございました。
